Open WhatsApp
Tap the three dots menu on Android or go to Settings on iPhone
Tap Privacy
Turn off Read Receipts
Note that this also turns off blue ticks for your messages in individual chats
Blue ticks in group chats will still appear
You will not be able to see read receipts from others when this is off
