How To Clean Vinyl Records?

Remove the record from the sleeve and handle only the edges and label

Dry dust removal first using an anti-static brush or a clean microfiber cloth

Prepare a cleaning solution (use a record-specific cleaner) and a separate microfiber cloth or record-cleaning pad

Apply the solution to the record surface (or to the cleaning pad) without saturating the label

Clean using straight strokes from the center to the outer edge, or follow your machine’s instructions

Use a second clean microfiber cloth to remove loosened grime and excess fluid, wiping center to edge

If using a vacuum record cleaning machine, apply the fluid and vacuum according to the machine instructions

For stubborn buildup, repeat the cleaning cycle rather than scrubbing harder

Rinse only if your method requires it (use distilled water for any rinse step)

Dry completely before playing, using a microfiber drying cloth or air-drying on a clean rack

Clean the record again if you notice residue or persistent noise

Clean the stylus and tonearm before and after playing freshly cleaned records

Store the record in a clean inner sleeve (consider anti-static sleeves)

Clean the cleaning tools (brushes, cloths, pads) so they don’t re-deposit dirt
