Drink warm fluids (tea, broth, warm water with honey)
Gargle warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in 1 cup warm water) several times daily
Use honey (1–2 teaspoons) as needed for throat relief
Stay well hydrated
Rest your voice and avoid yelling or whispering
Use throat lozenges or hard candy
Use a humidifier or take steamy showers
Avoid smoke, vaping, and other irritants
Avoid alcohol and very spicy or acidic foods if they worsen symptoms
Consider OTC pain relief such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen (if safe for you)
Consider OTC numbing throat sprays/gels (follow label directions)
Check for fever, worsening pain, or symptoms lasting more than a few days
Seek medical care urgently if you have trouble breathing, drooling, inability to swallow, severe one-sided throat pain, muffled “hot potato” voice, neck swelling, rash, or dehydration
Seek medical care if symptoms last longer than 3–5 days, are severe, or you suspect strep throat (e.g., fever without cough, swollen/tender neck glands, white patches)
