Wash your hands before feeding
Hold the baby in a safe, supported position
Feed breast milk or formula only
Feed on demand when the baby shows hunger cues
Offer the breast or bottle every 2 to 3 hours, or as needed
Make sure the baby latches well if breastfeeding
Keep the bottle nipple filled with milk to reduce air intake
Burp the baby during and after feeding
Watch for signs of fullness and stop when the baby is done
Keep the baby upright for a short time after feeding
Never prop a bottle or leave the baby unattended while feeding
Follow your pediatrician’s advice for feeding amounts and schedule
Seek medical help if the baby has trouble feeding, vomits often, or has fewer wet diapers than expected
