How To Know If Eggs Are Still Good?

Check the expiration or “sell by” date on the carton

Do a water test: place the egg in a bowl of water

If it sinks and lays flat: likely fresh

If it sinks but stands upright: use soon (not ideal)

If it floats: discard

Crack it into a separate bowl before using

If you see an unusual color, cloudiness, or any mold: discard

Smell it after cracking

If it smells bad or sulfur-like: discard

Inspect the shell for cracks or leaks

If the shell is cracked, leaking, or slimy: discard

If stored properly in the refrigerator, use within about 3–5 weeks of purchase (even if past the “sell by” date)
