Identify the problem area and desired drainage path

Mark the trench route with stakes or spray paint

Measure the slope to ensure proper fall

Dig a trench along the marked route

Make the trench bottom slope away from the problem area

Remove rocks, roots, and debris from the trench

Line the trench with landscape fabric

Add a layer of washed gravel to the bottom

Place a perforated drain pipe in the trench

Position the pipe holes facing downward or per manufacturer instructions

Connect pipe sections with appropriate couplings

Add cleanout access points if needed

Cover the pipe with more washed gravel

Fold the landscape fabric over the gravel

Backfill with soil or top with additional gravel

Direct the outlet to a safe discharge area

Install a pop-up emitter, dry well, or daylight outlet if needed

Compact the soil lightly

Test the drain with water to confirm flow
