How To Build A French Drain?

Check local codes and call utility marking services before digging

Identify the drainage problem area and the desired outlet point

Measure the slope and plan a continuous downhill path

Mark the trench line with paint or string

Gather materials: shovel, trenching tool, landscape fabric, gravel, perforated pipe, pipe fittings, and outlet components

Dig the trench to the planned depth and width

Maintain a steady slope throughout the trench

Remove rocks, roots, and loose soil from the trench

Line the trench with landscape fabric, leaving extra fabric on both sides

Add a base layer of gravel

Place the perforated pipe with the holes facing down

Connect pipe sections and fittings as needed

Cover the pipe with more gravel

Fold the landscape fabric over the gravel

Backfill with soil or cover with topsoil, sod, or decorative stone

Ensure the outlet discharges to a safe drainage area

Test the drain with water and verify flow

Adjust low spots or blockages if needed

Maintain the drain by keeping the outlet clear and removing debris
