How To Dig A French Drain?

Call utility locating services before digging

Choose the drain path downhill from the problem area

Mark the trench line with spray paint or stakes

Measure the slope and plan for a slight fall

Gather tools: shovel, trenching shovel, level, string line, wheelbarrow, gravel, pipe, landscape fabric, perforated pipe

Dig a trench along the marked line

Make the trench deep enough for the pipe and gravel

Keep the bottom of the trench sloped consistently

Remove rocks, roots, and loose soil from the trench

Line the trench with landscape fabric

Add a layer of gravel to the bottom

Place the perforated pipe with holes facing down or sideways

Check the slope again as you lay the pipe

Cover the pipe with more gravel

Wrap the landscape fabric over the gravel

Backfill the trench with soil or top with grass

Test the drain with water to confirm flow

Clean up the work area and compact the soil lightly
