How To Breastfeed A Baby?

Wash your hands

Get comfortable in a supported position

Hold your baby close, tummy to tummy

Make sure your baby’s head, neck, and body are aligned

Support your breast with your hand if needed

Tickling your baby’s lips with your nipple

Wait for your baby to open their mouth wide

Bring your baby to the breast, not the breast to the baby

Make sure the baby takes in a large mouthful of breast

Check that the lips are flanged outward

Ensure the chin touches the breast

Listen for swallowing

Let the baby nurse until they release the breast or seem satisfied

Burp your baby if needed

Offer the other breast if your baby still seems hungry

Alternate the starting breast at the next feeding

Feed on demand when your baby shows hunger cues

Seek help from a lactation consultant if you have pain or latch problems
