Check the app’s “Trash” or “Deleted Messages” folder (if available)
Search the chat for recently deleted content
Restore from a backup (iCloud/Google Drive/local backup) if the app supports it
Reinstall the app and sign in to restore data from backups (only if supported)
If you have device-to-device backups enabled, restore from the most recent backup prior to deletion
Contact the other person to ask if they still have the messages
If the platform supports it, use “message recovery” or “undo delete” features within the allowed time window
Review export options (some apps allow chat export; check if you previously exported)
If the messages were part of an email or SMS, check the provider’s archived/deleted recovery options
Check whether your provider/app has a retention policy that keeps deleted messages for a limited time
Stop further syncing or overwriting immediately after deletion, then attempt backup restore (if applicable)
If you’re using a managed work account, contact your administrator for possible retention/recovery options
