Remove the avocado pit from the fruit
Rinse the pit clean
Identify the top and bottom ends of the pit
Insert 3 to 4 toothpicks around the middle of the pit
Suspend the pit over a glass of water with the bottom end submerged
Place the glass in a warm spot with indirect sunlight
Change the water every few days
Wait for the pit to split and roots to grow
Wait for a stem to emerge from the top
Let the stem grow to about 6 inches
Cut the stem back to about 3 inches
Wait for more leaves to grow
Transfer the sprouted seed into a pot with well-draining soil
Keep the soil moist but not soggy
Place the pot in bright indirect light
Water regularly when the top soil feels dry
Repot into a larger container as the plant grows
Protect the plant from cold temperatures
