Wash your hands before touching the lip
Rinse the area gently with cool water
Apply direct pressure with clean gauze or a cloth for 10 to 15 minutes
Use a cold compress or ice wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling
Apply petroleum jelly or a lip balm to keep the area moist
Avoid picking at scabs or peeling skin
Avoid spicy, salty, acidic, or hot foods
Eat soft foods and drink cool liquids
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
Rinse your mouth with salt water after eating if the inside is cut
Use a clean bandage if the outside skin is open and can be covered
Get medical help if bleeding will not stop after 10 to 15 minutes of pressure
Get medical help if the cut is deep, gaping, or may need stitches
Get medical help if a tooth is broken or loose
Get medical help if there is severe swelling, signs of infection, or trouble breathing
Get medical help if the injury happened with a head injury or loss of consciousness
