Open the grill and remove the cooking grate
Add charcoal to the firebox or charcoal grate
Light the charcoal using a chimney starter, fire starter cubes, or approved lighter
Wait until the charcoal is covered with gray ash
Spread the hot charcoal evenly for direct heat or pile it to one side for indirect heat
Replace the cooking grate
Open the vents to increase airflow and heat
Preheat the grill with the lid closed
Clean and oil the cooking grate before placing food on it
Place food on the grill and close the lid if needed
Adjust vents to control temperature
Turn food as needed using tongs or a spatula
Cook until the food reaches a safe internal temperature
Remove food from the grill
Close the vents and lid to extinguish the coals
Let the grill and ashes cool completely
Dispose of ashes safely in a metal container
