Open the grill vents
Remove the cooking grate
Arrange charcoal in a pile or chimney starter
Add lighter cubes or crumpled newspaper under the charcoal if using a chimney starter
Light the fire starter
Wait until the charcoal is covered with gray ash
Pour the hot charcoal into the grill if using a chimney starter
Spread the charcoal into the desired arrangement
Replace the cooking grate
Let the grill preheat
Adjust the vents to control the temperature
