Crumple 2 to 4 sheets of newspaper and place them in the center of the grill
Build a small pyramid or mound of charcoal over the newspaper
Leave some gaps between the charcoal pieces for airflow
Light the newspaper in several spots with a long lighter or match
Wait until the charcoal edges turn gray and ashy
Add more charcoal gradually if needed
Use lighter fluid only if necessary and follow the product instructions exactly
Never add lighter fluid to already lit coals
Keep the grill lid open until the coals are fully lit
Spread the coals out once they are mostly covered in ash
Use heat-resistant gloves and long-handled tools
Keep water, sand, or a fire extinguisher nearby
Never use gasoline, kerosene, or other accelerants
Let the coals burn until they are ready before cooking
