Open the grill lid
Check that the grill is clean and dry
Make sure the gas tank is connected and turned on, if using gas
Turn on the gas at the tank
Turn the burner control knobs to ignite, if using a gas grill
Press the igniter button or use a long lighter if needed
Wait for the burners to light
Adjust the flame to the desired heat
If using charcoal, open the bottom vents
Place charcoal in the grill
Add lighter fluid only if the charcoal is designed for it
Light the charcoal with a long match or lighter
Let the coals burn until they are covered with gray ash
Spread the coals evenly or arrange them for direct or indirect heat
Close the lid and preheat the grill
Confirm the grill is lit before cooking
