Keep the cat and dog separated at first
Exchange bedding or toys so they can get used to each other’s scent
Feed them on opposite sides of a closed door
Let them hear and smell each other before meeting face to face
Use a leash or carrier for the dog during first meetings
Allow the cat to have high places and safe escape routes
Keep initial meetings short and calm
Reward both animals for relaxed behavior
Watch for signs of stress, fear, or aggression
Increase time together gradually
Never force interaction
Supervise all early interactions
Separate them again if either becomes upset
Be patient and move at the slower animal’s pace
