Wash your hands
Apply firm, direct pressure with clean gauze or a tissue
Hold pressure continuously for 5 to 10 minutes without checking
If needed, add more gauze on top; do not remove the first layer
Raise the area above heart level if possible
Rinse the cut with cool water after bleeding slows
Apply an alum block, styptic pencil, or a small amount of petroleum jelly
Use a cold compress to help constrict blood vessels
Avoid shaving over the area again until it heals
Seek medical help if bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes of firm pressure
Seek medical help if the cut is deep, gaping, or spurting blood
Seek medical help if you feel faint or the bleeding is heavy
