Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing near the burned area
Gently clean the area with mild soap and water
Do not use ice, butter, toothpaste, or oils
Cover the burn with a sterile, non-stick bandage or clean cloth
Keep the burned area elevated if possible
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Do not break blisters
Change the dressing daily or if it becomes wet or dirty
Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, pus, or worsening pain
Seek medical care if the burn is large, deep, on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over a joint
Seek medical care if the burn was caused by chemicals, electricity, or fire and seems severe
