Wash your hands
Clean the area with soap and water
Soak your foot in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes
Dry the area with a clean towel
Sterilize tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
If the splinter tip is visible, grip it with tweezers and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, gently lift the skin with the sterilized needle until the tip is exposed
Remove the splinter with tweezers
Wash the area again with soap and water
Apply antiseptic or antibiotic ointment
Cover with a clean bandage
Change the bandage daily
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, broken, near a nail, or cannot be removed
Seek medical help if there is redness, swelling, pus, worsening pain, or fever
Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date
