Get inside the nearest substantial building immediately
Move to the basement or the most central, windowless room
Stay away from windows, doors, and exterior walls
Lie flat and cover your head if you are caught outside during the blast
If you are outside, get behind a solid barrier and then move indoors as fast as possible
Remove outer clothing if it may be contaminated
Seal contaminated clothing in a plastic bag if available
Wash exposed skin and hair with soap and water
Do not use conditioner on your hair
Put on clean clothing if available
Close windows, doors, vents, and fireplaces
Turn off fans, air conditioners, and heating systems that bring in outside air
Stay indoors for at least 24 hours unless authorities say otherwise
Listen to official emergency alerts on battery-powered or hand-crank radio if available
Follow evacuation or shelter instructions from authorities
Avoid eating or drinking anything exposed to fallout
Drink sealed bottled water or stored water only
Use only sealed food or food stored indoors
If you must go outside, cover your nose and mouth with a cloth or mask
Keep your hands away from your face
Do not touch dust or debris unnecessarily
Seek medical help for burns, injuries, or radiation exposure as soon as it is safe
If you suspect fallout exposure, stay sheltered until told it is safe to leave
Keep emergency supplies ready in advance
Keep water, nonperishable food, flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, radio, medications, and important documents in a go-bag
Know the nearest fallout shelter locations
Practice a family communication and reunification plan
