How To Wire A GFCI?

Turn off power at the breaker

Verify the circuit is de-energized with a tester

Remove the existing outlet cover and receptacle

Identify the line wires coming from the panel

Identify any load wires going to downstream outlets

Connect the hot line wire to the brass LINE terminal

Connect the neutral line wire to the silver LINE terminal

Connect downstream hot wires to the brass LOAD terminal if GFCI protection is needed downstream

Connect downstream neutral wires to the silver LOAD terminal if GFCI protection is needed downstream

Connect the ground wire to the green ground screw

Keep LINE and LOAD wires separate

Tighten all terminal screws securely

Fold wires neatly into the box

Mount the GFCI receptacle in the box

Install the cover plate

Turn power back on

Press the TEST button

Press the RESET button

Confirm the outlet works properly

Use a licensed electrician if wiring is unclear or damaged
