Choose the deck location and mark the footprint
Measure and square the layout with stakes and string

Remove topsoil and level the ground
Lay landscaping fabric if desired
Set concrete deck blocks, footings, or pavers at planned support points
Ensure all supports are level and evenly spaced
Build the outer frame with pressure-treated lumber
Square the frame and fasten corners securely
Add interior joists at proper spacing
Install blocking if needed for added stability
Recheck level across the entire frame
Attach joists to supports with approved hardware
Install deck boards perpendicular to the joists
Leave consistent gaps between boards for drainage
Fasten boards with exterior-rated screws or hidden fasteners
Trim board ends flush with the frame
Add fascia boards if desired
Sand rough edges and inspect all fasteners
Apply stain, sealant, or preservative if needed
Recheck stability and make final adjustments
