Plan the patio size, shape, and location
Check local codes, permits, and utility lines
Gather materials and tools
Mark the patio outline with stakes and string
Remove grass, roots, and topsoil
Excavate the area to the required depth
Compact the subgrade
Install landscape fabric if desired
Add and compact a gravel base in layers
Add and level a sand bedding layer
Set edge restraints around the perimeter
Lay pavers in the chosen pattern
Cut pavers to fit edges and corners
Check level and alignment as you go
Fill joints with polymeric sand or joint sand
Compact the pavers again
Sweep in more joint sand if needed
Clean the surface
Seal the patio if desired
