Wash your hands before touching the blister
Clean the area gently with soap and water
Leave small, unbroken blisters intact
Protect the blister with a blister bandage or hydrocolloid dressing
Reduce friction by changing shoes or socks
Keep the area dry and clean
If the blister is large and painful, drain it with a sterilized needle while keeping the skin flap intact
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment after draining if the skin is open
Cover with a clean bandage and change it daily
Rest the foot and avoid activities that rub the blister
Use padding or moleskin around the blister, not directly on top of it
Wear moisture-wicking socks and well-fitting shoes
Seek medical care if there is redness, warmth, pus, fever, or worsening pain
Seek medical care sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
