Elevate your feet above heart level several times a day
Rest and avoid prolonged standing or sitting
Walk or do gentle ankle pumps and foot circles
Reduce salt intake
Drink enough water
Wear loose, comfortable shoes and socks
Avoid crossing your legs for long periods
Try compression socks if appropriate
Apply a cool compress for 15 to 20 minutes at a time
Lose excess weight if needed
Review medications that may cause swelling with a doctor
Seek medical care if swelling is sudden, severe, one-sided, painful, red, warm, or comes with shortness of breath
