Confirm the dog is choking and cannot breathe, cough, or make sound
Open the dog’s mouth and look for a visible object
Remove the object only if you can see it clearly and can grasp it safely
If the dog is small, hold it with its back against your chest and perform firm inward and upward thrusts just below the rib cage
If the dog is medium or large, stand or kneel behind the dog and wrap your arms around the abdomen
Place a fist just below the ribs and above the abdomen
Use quick, firm inward and upward abdominal thrusts
Repeat thrusts until the object is expelled or the dog becomes unresponsive
If the dog is unconscious, lay it on its side and check the mouth again for an object
If the object is still visible, remove it carefully
Begin CPR if the dog is not breathing or has no heartbeat
Get the dog to a veterinarian immediately after the choking episode
Call an emergency veterinarian while en route if possible
