Tilt your head to let water drain out
Gently dry the outer ear with a towel
Use a hair dryer on the lowest, coolest setting from a safe distance
Keep the ear dry until it heals
Avoid swimming and avoid getting water in the ear
Do not put cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects in the ear
Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Try over-the-counter drying ear drops only if you do not have ear tubes, a perforated eardrum, or ear drainage
Apply a warm compress to the outside of the ear for comfort
Rest and avoid irritating the ear canal
Seek medical care if pain is severe, symptoms worsen, fever develops, hearing decreases, or symptoms do not improve within 1 to 2 days
