Wash the area with warm water and mild soap
Apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes
Gently exfoliate the skin with a soft washcloth
Stop shaving or waxing until it heals
Do not squeeze, pick, or dig at the hair
Use clean tweezers only if the hair tip is visible above the skin
Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream if the skin is irritated
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the area is open or infected
Wear loose, breathable underwear and clothing
Keep the area clean and dry
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or repeated ingrown hairs
