Dig around the stump and cut exposed roots with an axe, saw, or loppers
Drill multiple deep holes into the top and sides of the stump
Fill the holes with stump remover or potassium nitrate
Add water to help the chemical soak in
Cover the stump with a tarp to keep it dry and speed decay
Wait several weeks to several months for the stump to soften
Chop the softened stump apart with an axe or mattock
Pull out remaining roots with a shovel, pry bar, or winch
Burn the stump only if local laws allow and fire safety is assured
Grind the stump with a stump grinder
Hire a tree service for large or difficult stumps
Use Epsom salt in drilled holes as a slower natural option
Keep the area clear and repeat treatment until the stump is gone
