Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with the common denominator
Add (or subtract) the numerators
Keep the common denominator
Simplify the result by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor
If denominators are already the same, add (or subtract) numerators and keep the denominator
For mixed numbers, convert to improper fractions first, then combine
