How to Address a Lawyer?

Use “Mr.” or “Ms.” followed by the lawyer’s last name

Use “Attorney [Last Name]” if appropriate

Use “Esquire” or “Esq.” after the lawyer’s full name in writing

In formal correspondence, use “Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name]”

In court, address the lawyer as “Counsel”

If the lawyer has a title, use that title

If unsure, ask the lawyer how they prefer to be addressed
