Prepare the tablet and any pill pockets, treats, or a small towel
Wash your hands
Keep the cat calm and secure in a quiet area
Wrap the cat in a towel if needed, leaving the head exposed
Hold the cat gently but firmly from behind or from the side
Tilt the cat’s head slightly upward
Open the mouth by placing one finger on the lower jaw and another on the upper jaw
Place the tablet as far back on the tongue as possible
Close the mouth immediately
Hold the mouth closed and gently stroke the throat or blow lightly on the nose to encourage swallowing
Watch for swallowing before releasing the cat
Offer a small amount of water, food, or a treat if appropriate
Check that the tablet was actually swallowed
Repeat only as directed by a veterinarian
Use a pill popper or pill gun if recommended
Ask a veterinarian for help if the cat resists strongly or cannot swallow pills
Never crush or split tablets unless a veterinarian says it is safe to do so
