Gather required original documents or certified copies proving identity, age, and immigration status
If applying for a child, gather the child’s birth certificate and proof of the parent’s identity
If you are not a U.S. citizen, gather your immigration documents and work authorization, if applicable
Find your local Social Security office or check whether you can apply by mail
Submit the completed application and documents to the Social Security Administration
Wait for the Social Security card to be mailed to your address on file
If needed, contact the Social Security Administration to check the status of your application
