Select a router bit sized for your work and set the cutting depth using the router table’s bit height controls
Install the correct bit and tighten the collet or bit nut securely
Set the fence and align it so the bit path matches your intended cut
Set the fence height and angle (if doing angled cuts)
Adjust the bit height for the first pass (use a shallow pass for deeper cuts)
Turn on dust collection and confirm airflow at the hood/guard
Set up a push stick/push block and ensure you have safe handling tools ready
Verify the workpiece is flat, stable, and supported before starting
Do a test cut on scrap material and fine-tune bit height and fence position as needed
Use the correct side of the fence for the cut and maintain consistent pressure against the fence
Keep hands away from the bit; use push tools for the final stages of the cut
Feed the workpiece at a steady, controlled rate without forcing the cut
Maintain proper workpiece contact with the fence throughout the entire pass
For multiple passes, reduce the depth incrementally and repeat adjustments between passes
Use a featherboard or hold-down fixture if needed to prevent lifting or drifting during the cut
Avoid cutting small offcuts without adequate support; use a jig or fixture when necessary
For edge profiles and shaping, keep the workpiece aligned and use smooth, continuous motion
Turn off the router and wait for the bit to stop before removing scrap or adjusting settings
After finishing, retract the bit to a safe position and clean chips/dust from the table and fence area
