Preheat the oven to 400°F
Wash and scrub the red potatoes
Pat the potatoes dry
Prick each potato several times with a fork
Rub the potatoes with oil
Sprinkle with salt if desired
Place the potatoes directly on a baking sheet or oven rack
Bake for 45 to 60 minutes
Check for doneness by piercing with a fork
Remove from the oven
Let cool slightly before serving
