Do not stop eating gluten before testing unless your clinician tells you to
Make an appointment with a primary care clinician or gastroenterologist
Tell the clinician about your symptoms, family history, and any autoimmune conditions
Ask for celiac blood tests
Get tested for tissue transglutaminase IgA antibody
Get tested for total serum IgA
If needed, get additional blood tests such as deamidated gliadin peptide antibodies or endomysial antibodies
If blood tests suggest celiac disease, have an upper endoscopy with small intestine biopsy
Follow the clinician’s instructions about how much gluten to eat before testing
Ask whether genetic testing for HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 is appropriate
Do not start a gluten-free diet until testing is complete
Review all results with the clinician to confirm the diagnosis
