Add salt to the water
Bring the water to a boil
Reduce to a simmer
Cook until the potatoes are tender
Drain the potatoes well
Return the potatoes to the pot
Mash the potatoes with a masher or fork
Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper
Mix until smooth and creamy
Serve immediately
