Check local building codes and obtain required permits
Mark the wall location and set out string lines
Excavate a trench for the footing
Compact the soil in the trench
Build and level a form for the concrete footing
Place rebar if required by code or design
Pour concrete footing
Level and cure the footing
Lay out the first course of bricks dry to check spacing
Mix mortar to the proper consistency
Spread a mortar bed on the footing
Set the first brick and check level
Lay the remaining bricks in the first course
Keep joints even and consistent
Stagger vertical joints in each new course
Apply mortar to brick ends and bed joints as you go
Check plumb, level, and alignment frequently
Install wall ties or reinforcement if required
Insert control joints where needed
Cut bricks as needed for corners and ends
Tool the mortar joints before the mortar hardens
Clean excess mortar from the brick faces
Continue building courses to the desired height
Cap the wall if required
Allow the wall to cure properly
Inspect the finished wall for alignment and joint quality
