Choose a level, well-drained location with some shade and easy access to the coop
Measure the space needed based on the number of chickens you have
Mark the run’s outline with stakes and string
Gather materials such as pressure-treated lumber, hardware cloth, screws, hinges, latches, and roofing if needed
Build a sturdy frame for the run using wood or metal posts
Anchor the frame securely into the ground
Attach hardware cloth to all sides, including the top and lower edges
Bury the wire or add an apron around the perimeter to prevent digging predators
Install a secure door or access panel with predator-proof latches
Add a roof or cover to protect from rain, hawks, and other predators
Create a solid connection between the chicken coop and the run
Add bedding or ground cover such as sand, wood chips, or straw
Place feeders, waterers, perches, and dust bath areas inside the run
Check for sharp edges, gaps, and weak spots
Test all doors, latches, and panels for security
Inspect the run regularly and repair any damage promptly
