Measure the closet width, depth, and height
Decide the shelf locations and spacing
Choose shelf material such as plywood or MDF
Gather tools: tape measure, level, saw, drill, screws, wall anchors, brackets, stud finder, pencil
Mark the shelf height on the walls
Locate and mark wall studs
Cut the shelf boards to size
Cut support cleats or brackets if needed
Sand the cut edges
Attach cleats or brackets to the wall at the marked height
Secure cleats or brackets into studs when possible
Use wall anchors where studs are not available
Check that supports are level
Place the shelf boards on the supports
Fasten the shelves to the supports with screws
Add front trim if desired
Fill screw holes and touch up the finish if needed
Test the shelves for stability before loading items
