Redeem any rewards before closing the account
Update or cancel any automatic payments linked to the card
Call Capital One customer service using the number on the back of your card
Request that the credit card account be closed
Ask for written confirmation that the account has been canceled
Cut up the card after the account is closed
Check your credit report later to confirm the account is closed
