Stay calm and keep people and pets away
Close interior doors to confine the bat to one room if possible
Open windows and exterior doors in that room to give the bat an exit
Turn off lights and leave the room quietly
If the bat does not leave, put on gloves and use a small box or container
Wait for the bat to land on a wall or other surface
Place the container over the bat
Slide a stiff piece of cardboard under the container
Secure the cardboard and container together
Take the bat outside and release it away from people and pets
If the bat was found in a room where someone was sleeping, contact local health authorities or a doctor about rabies guidance
If the bat is injured or you cannot safely catch it, contact animal control or a wildlife rehabilitator
