Turn off the smoke detector if it has a power switch
Remove the detector from its mounting bracket if needed
Open the battery compartment
Remove the old battery
Check the battery type and replace it with the correct new battery
Insert the new battery in the correct orientation
Close the battery compartment
Reattach the smoke detector to the mounting bracket if removed
Press the test button to confirm it works
Replace the battery again if the low-battery chirp continues
