How to Change GFCI Outlet?

Turn off power to the outlet at the breaker panel

Verify the power is off with a voltage tester

Remove the outlet cover plate

Unscrew the GFCI outlet from the electrical box

Pull the outlet out carefully

Take a photo or label the existing wire connections

Disconnect the wires from the old GFCI outlet

Connect the wires to the new GFCI outlet

Attach the line wires to the LINE terminals

Attach the load wires to the LOAD terminals if needed

Connect the ground wire to the green ground screw

Tighten all terminal screws securely

Fold the wires back into the box

Screw the new GFCI outlet into the electrical box

Reinstall the cover plate

Turn the power back on at the breaker

Press the RESET button on the GFCI outlet

Test the outlet using the TEST button

Confirm the outlet trips and resets properly
