How to Change Out a Ceiling Fan?

Turn off power to the ceiling fan at the circuit breaker

Verify the power is off with a voltage tester

Remove the fan blades if needed for easier handling

Remove the light kit, if present

Disconnect the fan wiring from the ceiling box

Support the fan while removing the mounting hardware

Lower and remove the old fan

Check that the ceiling electrical box is rated for a ceiling fan

Assemble the new fan according to the manufacturer’s instructions

Attach the new mounting bracket to the ceiling box

Connect the new fan wiring to the house wiring

Secure the wire connections with wire nuts

Tuck the wires into the ceiling box

Attach the fan motor to the mounting bracket

Install the fan blades

Install the light kit, if included

Tighten all screws and fasteners

Restore power at the breaker

Test the fan and light functions

Check for wobbling and tighten or balance if needed
