How to Charge a Dead Car Battery?

Park both vehicles close enough for jumper cables to reach, but do not let them touch

Turn off both vehicles and remove the keys

Put both vehicles in park or neutral and set the parking brakes

Open both hoods and locate the batteries

Identify the positive terminal marked with a plus sign or red cover

Identify the negative terminal marked with a minus sign or black cover

Connect one red clamp to the dead battery positive terminal

Connect the other red clamp to the good battery positive terminal

Connect one black clamp to the good battery negative terminal

Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal ground on the dead car, away from the battery

Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes

Try starting the dead vehicle

If it starts, keep it running

Remove the cables in reverse order

Drive the revived vehicle for at least 20 to 30 minutes

If the car does not start, wait a few minutes and try again

If it still does not start, use a battery charger or call for roadside assistance

Wear eye protection and avoid touching the clamps together

Do not smoke or create sparks near the battery

Follow the vehicle owner’s manual for battery-specific instructions
