Locate the electric meter, usually near the main service entrance, outside wall, basement, garage, or utility area
Identify the meter type: analog, digital, or smart meter
For an analog meter, read the dials from left to right
For an analog meter, note each dial number the pointer has just passed
For an analog meter, if the pointer is between two numbers, record the lower number
For an analog meter, if the pointer is exactly on a number, check the dial to the right before deciding whether to use that number or the previous one
For a digital meter, read the number shown on the display
For a smart meter, check the display screen or the utility app if applicable
Ignore any red numbers, decimal points, or numbers marked as test or register if your utility does not require them
Compare the current reading with a previous reading to calculate usage
Subtract the earlier reading from the later reading to find electricity consumed
Record the date and reading for future reference
If the meter has multiple registers or time-of-use readings, note each required register separately
Contact your utility company if the meter display is unclear or damaged
