How to Cite Poems In-Text?

Use the poet’s last name and the line number(s) in parentheses: (Frost 3)

If the poem has line numbers, cite them instead of page numbers

For a single line, use one line number: (Angelou 12)

For two lines, use a range with an en dash: (Keats 4–5)

For three or more lines, use the first and last line numbers: (Whitman 7–10)

If the poet’s name is mentioned in the sentence, include only the line number(s): Frost writes, “…” (3)

If the poem has no line numbers, use the page number if available: (Poe 45)

If citing multiple poems by the same author, include a shortened title if needed: (Dickinson, “Hope” 8)

If citing a poem with no author listed, use the title in quotation marks: (“The Road Not Taken” 2)

Follow the citation style required by your assignment or publication, such as MLA, APA, or Chicago
