How To Cite The Bible In MLA?

In MLA, cite the Bible in the text by giving the book, chapter, and verse: (John 3.16)

Use periods between chapter and verse, not commas or colons

If citing a specific translation, include it in the first in-text citation if needed: (Gen. 1.1, New Revised Standard Version)

In the Works Cited, list the Bible version used

Format a Works Cited entry as: The Holy Bible. Version, Publisher, Year

Example Works Cited entry: The Holy Bible. New Revised Standard Version, Oxford UP, 2018

If you use a specific edition with an editor, include the editor after the title

If citing more than one Bible version, identify the version in each citation

Use standard abbreviations for books of the Bible when appropriate

Do not include page numbers for Bible citations unless the source has them and your instructor requires them
